Another one from the pollinator garden, Cassia didymobotrya, or as my son calls it, the popcorn????plant. Yes, it actually does smell like movie theatre popcorn, not the flowers that are blooming, but before the flower opens run the bud and smell your fingers and tell me it doesn’t smell like AMC. So you know I rock with butterflies, and thanks to my better half I had to convert a portion of my garden in a butterfly pollinator garden. This plant is a host plant for the beautiful sulphur butterfly, and it grows well in our climate (Zone 9A). Plus it will flower from the summer to the fall. You will have to prune the Cassia or it will go wild, and careful where you place it because it can get over 6’ tall. The majority of cassia plants have beautiful yellow blooms all fall long, but plant in the spring so it has time to grow significant roots. It can also be planted in the fall, but if we have a hard freeze there’s a chance it doesn’t make it through. Full sun or part shade and fertilize regularly and this plant will get it popping. Another reason I love it, once established this plants needs minimal irrigation maybe because it has roots that extended something like 20+’ into the ground. My kind of plant- minimal upkeep, productive and serves more than one purpose. More baskets are filling up…everything was started from seeds including the Thai basil in the background. White and purple eggplants Marvel of Venice beans, Cranberry beans and fava beans Shishito sweet peppers and big hot peppers (unsure of its name) Okra Eight ball round zucchini Yellow pear tomatoes and black cherry tomatoes are as abundant as ever. Growing following tomato varieties for the first time: San Marzano tomatoes Yellow nugget cherry tomatoes Principe Borghese cherry tomatoes Indigo rose cherry tomatoes Isis Candy cherry tomatoes

Growing some giant dahlias flowers for dyeing. Aiming for efficiency of scale by selecting large, perennial flowers. With a little care, these should come back year on year and be quick to harvest. See hand for scale. The other night this beautiful black swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) alighted very close to me and stayed there while a friend and I picked black currants. It’s been a banner year for butterflies of all kinds in the garden, but I have no photos because it is rare to get this close. ???? @langueverte
